This contract position will provide certified physician assistant services and will be scheduled on a PRN basis by UNTHSC's Correctional Medicine Department to support the coverage needs of the designated Federal Bureau of Prisons facility. Responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to: * Provide certified physician assistant services, including diagnostic and therapeutic medical care, to patients while under the guidance and supervision of a physician. * Services require knowledge of specific observation and examination procedures, and the ability to perform diagnostic and therapeutic tasks. Services do not include the full scope of interpretation of medical findings requiring the full professional background of the licensed physician. * Assist in the examination and observation of patients by performing such duties as taking case histories, conducting physical examinations, and ordering laboratory studies during hospital rounds and clinic visits. * Carry out special procedures, including giving injections or other medication, apply or change dressing, perform lumbar punctures, or suture minor lacerations, as directed by a physician. * Perform and/or assist with delegated clinical procedures, implement physician's orders and record observations and evaluations of patient response in a timely and detail-oriented manner. * Reinforce patient teaching, as delegated by the physician, clearly documenting all patient responses in the patient record and providing updates in the patient record, accordingly. * Accept and document orders from the physician consistent with facility guidelines, policies, and procedures. * Clearly communicate, verbally and in writing, patient care activities and patient conditions to appropriate parties. * Delivers quality medical care while minimizing the risk of infection, contamination, harm, or injury to the patient. * Participate in the quality and performance improvement process, as requested, within the assigned health care facility. * All other duties as assigned within the scope of their Certified Physician Assistant licensure to support the clinical needs of the assigned Federal Bureau of Prisons facility.
