The Biological Department at the University of North Texas is seeking to hire a Research Assistant to join our team working in the field of Synthetic Biology. Responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to: * Care for plants and monitor health of plants for problems including those related to pests, water, soil and fertilizer. * Aid in analysis of transgenic plants, collect and store relevant data pertaining to the analyses. * Prepare appropriate solutions and growth media for various laboratory needs. * Prepare plates with appropriate media for plant and bacterial growth, and other purposes. * Harvest, sterilize, store, and plant seeds, and transfer plants between media and soil as needed. Label all seeds, plates and plants clearly and accurately and maintain a written record of seeds and plants. * Perform molecular biology laboratory tasks, including cloning, DNA extraction, PCR, and other tasks as needed. * Use appropriate sterile techniques. Maintain a clean laboratory bench and plant growth room space at all times. Clean up any extraneous plant matter to reduce risk of pests or pathogens. * Perform calculations and analyses of data as required. * Summarize and present results to other lab members as required. * Effectively communicate with supervisor and coworkers regarding problems, research results, and other issues important to the successful completion of activities. The successful candidate will possess a Bachelor's degree with major course work in the field of assignment, and two years related experience; or any equivalent combination of education, experience and training which provides the following knowledge, abilities, and skills: * Knowledge of scientific research techniques, methods and procedures. * Working knowledge of equipment used in related fields of research. * Considerable knowledge of health, safety, and security precautions in keeping with type of research being done. * Ability to set up and operate research instrumentation and equipment. Ability to make accurate assays and to prepare reports, charts, or graphs on results. * Ability to work effectively with fellow researchers, staff members, faculty, supervisors and students.
