The Police Department at the University of North Texas is seeking to hire a Police Officer Recruit/Police Officer to to join our team. This position may be filled at the Police Officer Recruit (unlicensed) or Police Officer (TCOLE licensed) level. Responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to: * New officers attend the Basic Peace Officer Course, if not previously licensed, and participate in the police department's field training officer (FTO) program from eight (8) to seventeen (17) weeks, depending upon their prior experience level. Upon completion of the FTO program, officers are assigned to a patrol shift and work under the general supervision of a shift supervisor (Police Sergeant). * During FTO and while assigned to the patrol division, the officer performs all duties normally associated with employment as a licensed police officer including: preventive patrol; arrest, search & seizure; traffic enforcement; crash investigation; public safety and service; investigation of criminal incidents; and maintaining public order on the University campus and surrounding area. The officer is responsible for enforcement of criminal laws, ordinances, traffic laws, and the enforcement of University regulations which specifically pertain to the behavior and welfare of students, faculty, staff, and the general public. Work involves patrolling the campus area and surrounding jurisdiction by vehicle, bicycle, and foot, both day and night. The officer must exercise good judgment and utilize discretion when dealing with violators of laws and University regulations. The officer must be willing to work special assignments and be on call in time of crisis or emergency. * Incumbents may also be assigned to specialized functions such as criminal investigation, canine unit, traffic enforcement, narcotics, specialized task force participation, administration, or other specialized duties. Officers regularly participate in University events and provide police and security services at a variety of special events; including, athletic events, dances, parties, concerts, seminars, speaking engagements, student activities, etc. The University of North Texas System and its component institutions are committed to equal opportunity and comply with all applicable federal and state laws regarding nondiscrimination and affirmative action. The following knowledge, skills, and abilities are required: * Good moral character and ability to furnish acceptable character references. * Understanding of and willingness to abide by the Police Officers Code of Ethics. * Physical ability to perform Police Officer (Law Enforcement) duties. * Ability and willingness to work long or irregular hours, on various and changing shifts, sometimes under severe emotional stress and inclement weather. * Exercise good judgment and utilize tact and courtesy when working with the public under frequently stressful conditions. * Ability to react quickly and effectively under emergency (high stress) situations. * Demonstrate professional demeanor and superior oral communication skills. * Ability to formulate effective solutions to problem situations in accordance with statutes, regulations, and training. * Knowledge of safety and security precautions appropriate to work performed.
