Widening gaps between demand and supply of skilled workers mean that recruitment will see a more competitive hiring and spending environment in 2015. In the coming year, 69% of recruiters expect to see competition increase. In the face of more challenging recruitment, what trends do recruiters need to keep up with to ensure successful sourcing and hiring in 2015?

Social Media Networking and Recruiting
If you haven’t already, now is the time to increase your presence on Social Medias. At the end of last year, we here at Self Opportunity decided it was time to jump on board! We created a Digital Media team in order to come up with a plan to optimize our social media presence and stick with it! Remember you may not have the time or resources to keep up with all of the popular sites available; don’t worry - pick just a couple to focus on!

Social Networks not only help with networking but they can be effective advertising/recruiting tools. Advertising on Social Networks can help you target/reach who you want more easily and often more cost effectively.

Increase Your Company’s Mobile Capabilities
This key trend is one of the least tapped into by recruiters so far. There’s a growing disparity between the 43% of job seekers who use a mobile device for their job searches and the 59% of recruiters who don’t invest in mobile career sites at all. Not to mention the fact that the number of candidates searching and applying for jobs on mobile devices is on the rise.

Companies and recruiters need to increase their mobile recruiting behaviors to match candidate demand. 2015 is the time to make recruitment websites mobile-friendly and to mobile-optimize job postings. The easier it is for candidates to search and apply the more applicants companies will be able to screen.

Focus on Quality Candidates – Not Quantity
With information more widely available it is smart to research candidates before even making contact. There are many companies that offer screening services where you can perform pre-employment background checks and more. How do employers without access to screening services spot resume lies/inconsistencies? There’s no substitute for careful (sometimes expensive) background checks but there are other things that can be done.

Most academic institutions have publicly-available records that enable employers to check claims made about qualifications and exam results. The same is true of professional organizations. Work references need to be cross-checked carefully too.

Another maybe more obvious solution is to locate a candidate’s social media profile. You can often learn more than you would ever want to know about your candidate before even calling them for an interview. With everyone having more of an online presence it is harder for candidates to “hide”.  This goes for recruiters too – what does your social media footprint look like?

Know Your Target Candidate When Advertising
As a recruiter, you possess extensive job descriptions/qualifications lists passed down from corporate or have possibly placed a candidate before for the same position you are searching for; therefore, you know what the successful candidate “looks like” that you are targeting. Now your next step is to know how to find this candidate. Does your target candidate search using their mobile phone? What sites/apps do they use to search? Do they prefer text, images, videos, etc.?

Establishing where your target candidate will search for a job is only half of the battle. It is important to understand how the resource works and what can be done to optimize your postings. Using SEO, keywords, or adding/leaving off certain content/options are things to consider.

Take Advantage of Free Resources
Everyone loves getting something for free, right? There are many free job posting sites on the web like Craigslist (in most areas), Ebay Classifieds, and ShiftGig to name just a few. Have you done your research? I would suggest at least trying these out; you might find one that works for your needs! I have found that some of the more local free services tend to work better; don’t be afraid to get involved in the community to learn more about what resources are available to you. Recruiting from afar? No problem; Google Maps is a great resource – walk the around neighborhood online!

More and more companies are using Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS); which is smart, they are a great resource. However, with any resource it is important to know all of its capabilities; are you optimizing your ATS capabilities? Often ATS sites can be linked to popular job boards though aggregation; this is free most of the time – don’t miss out!

I know what you are thinking; this is all great information, but I would like to learn more about exactly what I can do to make all of these tips turn into realities for my company in 2015. Don’t worry; I will be addressing each topic one at a time each month moving forward.

Please feel free to comment with any questions if you would like some more information now or just follow our blog to learn more about each topic addressed throughout 2015!
